This looks like Pima County Arizona, where I used to live. The cactus is called Cholla (chaw-ya) and the segments break off at the least provocation. When hiking in the Sonoran desert, I would always carry a pocket comb, tweezers and some duct tape. All very useful in removing the pods and spines.

There was the time when a young woman hiking with me got a large clump stuck to her butt... bit that's a "whole 'nother story" :D

<a href="#comment-193" rel="nofollow">@Confused little boy</a>
Once a rider tears through a desert area it takes an awfully long time for the desert to return to a pristine condition. Some would argue over 100 years.

Oh goodness... I feel his pain. I sat on one of those once. Embarrassing to point your butt up at a group of people as they pull out each cactus needle while you watch your panties burn in a bonfire... This guy definitely has it worse. Painful indeed!

I feel sorry for her, they really rip the flesh on the way out.

Contrary to myth, they are not barbed at the end!! It is much worse than that!! They are made of little overlapping pointy shingles. One overlaps the other down the full length. When you try to pull them out, each flap hooks on the flesh and spreads outwards, so they actually grip and tear the flesh down the full length of the spine. Go find a picture of one under an electron microscope, and you will see, and you will probably feel more sympathy for the poor girl.
