The cactus is called Cholla (chaw-ya) and the segments break off at the least provocation. When hiking in the Sonoran desert, I would always carry a pocket comb, tweezers and some duct tape. All very useful in removing the pods and spines. When you try to pull them out, each flap hooks on the flesh and spreads outwards, so they actually grip and tear the flesh down the full length of the spine. Go find a picture of one under an electron microscope, and you will see, and you will probably feel more sympathy for the poor girl. I feel sorry for her, they really rip the flesh on the way out.
